Consulting Work on Asset Building-- Mexico
A Global Assets Project Initiative
In 1993, Global Assets Project co-director Michael Sherraden consulted with the government of Mexico on shifting a portion of social security retirement policy to asset accounts, and making the system inclusive. In 1996, he was lead speaker (filling in for Martin Feldstein) at a research and policy conference in Mexico City on social security, again discussing inclusive asset accounts (later published in 1997). From 2001 through 2005 staff at the Center for Social Development have attended and advised in research planning meetings in Mexico on popular savings, savings in rural areas, and other asset building areas in microfinance. In 2004, Global Assets Project co-director Ray Boshara delivered a speech on assets at the OECD Forum on Mexico entitled “Policies to Promote Growth and Economic Development” (see presentation here).
